Today’s success story is about a woman named Priscilla. When she was younger, her image was very important to her, and over-exercising and under-eating eventually stopped her period. Even though she of course knew she didn’t have a period, she was in denial about the potential impact that might have on her fertility. Once she finally saw a doctor, she was labeled as unexplained, but years into her journey, she diagnosed herself with hypothalamic amenorrhea. Join us to hear what she describes as her recovery from HA and what ultimately led to her success twice over.

What you’ll hear in this episode:

  • At age 34, Priscilla is a mom to two little ones, and works at home as a certified health coach and helps in her parents’ business
  • Before infertility, Priscilla was consumed with her outward appearance and her body image, and says, “There was a dark cloud over me.”
  • How she met her husband in college and was attracted to his kindness and “old-fashioned” manners
  • As a couple, they are stronger than ever and don’t take life for granted
  • The desire for motherhood: how it began shortly after marriage
  • A year of trying and the first RE appointment with overwhelming emotion
  • Unexplained infertility and a self-diagnosis of hypothalamic amenorrhea
  • When Priscilla lost hope? After 5 years of treatments, a roller coaster of emotions, and the struggle of trying to convince herself she didn’t want kids anymore.
  • How she regained hope by connecting with others in an online infertility forum
  • The treatment plan, with injections and then, Priscilla’s holistic approach
  • What finally worked? Gaining weight, ending the intense exercise, and seeing her periods return.
  • A pregnancy, then a miscarriage but hopeful because “my body was functioning again”
  • Balancing work and treatments and the blessing of great insurance benefits
  • Red flags to look for that indicate hypothalamic amenorrhea
  • “My recovery journey” when she finally knew what was wrong and was ready to fix it
  • Recovery from HA: What does it take? A mindset change.
  • Priscilla’s exercise today: limited to yoga and walking
  • How infertility has changed Priscilla: “It’s completely made me a different person, not just physically, but mentally. I was shy without much self-confidence. I’ve come out of my shell and am finally comfortable in my body.”
  • Priscilla’s advice to herself back then: “Don’t be too hard on yourself and find a way to love yourself.”
