Today’s success story is about a woman named Sarah. She is a 46-year-old life coach and author of Motherhood Reimagined who enjoys walking her dogs and taking in nature. After deciding to build her family as a single woman via donor sperm, she consulted her OB/GYN. Unfortunately, her FSH came back high, and she was advised to seek an egg donor, as well. At first, Sarah responded with denial, insisting she could lower her FSH and improve her egg quality through natural remedies. After six months of at-home inseminations, she decided it was time to see a reproductive endocrinologist. Join us to hear how her new doctor uncovered even more unsettling news, but she ultimately became pregnant using a sperm donor from the U.S. and an egg donor in Mexico.

What you’ll hear in this episode:

  • Before infertility, Sarah was adventurous, spontaneous, lighthearted, and devoted to her Qigong practice, personal development, and alternative medicine
  • She used to want 11 kids! Then “life” happened and she lost sight of her desire for motherhood until she felt her biological clock ticking away
  • How she stopped traveling, started tracking cycles, and bought a house
  • When she discussed the process of using a sperm donor with her OB/GYN, her high FSH levels indicated infertility
  • The shock Sarah received when it was recommended that she use a sperm donor AND an egg donor
  • Trying acupuncture, herbs, natural healing, tracking cycles, and at-home IUI’s with a midwife
  • At the first RE visit, the test results were awful and egg donation became a necessity
  • Several at-home IUI’s, irregular cycles, and a medicated cycle with Clomid
  • Receiving the wonderful news that she was pregnant! (only to be told later she had been given someone else’s results and was NOT pregnant!)
  • An unsuccessful Letrozole cycle with no follicles, no eggs, and no thickening lining
  • The moment she came to terms with egg donation and why she went abroad for it
  • An egg donor from Mexico and a sperm donor from the US
  • The intricacies of getting sperm samples shipped to Mexico for the transfer
  • An “open ID donor,” pictures, audio files, and all that’s involved in choosing a sperm donor
  • Choosing an egg donor: ranking the “top three” and having friends do the same
  • Why embryo adoption didn’t feel like a good choice or an easy process
  • Going through this process as a single woman without a partner
  • Why she recommends alternative therapies for others
  • How Sarah feels about the practicality and wisdom of at-home IUI’s
  • How Sarah lost hope when she received the false pregnancy results and when her lining wasn’t thickening as needed
  • Having hope in the midst of despair
  • Switching her mindset from “IF I get pregnant” to “WHEN I get pregnant”
  • A fond memory of being in Mexico for two weeks for the transfer
  • Using difficulties as opportunities to work on self-improvement
  • From lawyer to life coach and balancing career and treatments
  • How she was able to afford treatment
  • How Sarah’s relationships changed through this process, as she was able to figure out who was “on board” with her and would be supportive
  • How infertility has changed Sarah: “It’s made me more comfortable with uncertainty and really understanding the ups and downs of life. As a mom, I’m incredibly solid!”
  • Sarah’s advice to herself back then: “Don’t be so scared of egg donation. It completely does not matter. See where the path leads you and how it unfolds like you never expected.”
