She’s a 33-year-old registered nurse who, even before infertility, was no stranger to challenges, such as the eating disorder in college that almost took her life. Although she loved babies as a little girl, once she entered high school, she found herself questioning whether or not she wanted kids. However, after her dad became ill, she realized how short life was and once again desired a larger family. Even though she of course knew she didn’t have a period, she was in denial about the potential impact that might have on her fertility. Once she finally saw a doctor, she was labeled as unexplained, but years into her journey, she diagnosed herself with hypothalamic amenorrhea. She didn’t want kids until she met her husband. They married after being in a long-distance relationship for a year. Because she hadn’t had a period since she was 18, she knew she’d have trouble conceiving and sought the help of an OB pretty early on. Today’s journey update is from a woman named Lara, who you might remember from Episodes 18 and 29. Shortly after she and her husband started trying to conceive, she made her way to the doctor because she wasn’t getting a period. Three diagnoses later, including Hypothalamic Amenorrhea and low morphology, they decided to try IUI first since it was covered by insurance, even though their doctor recommended heading straight to IVF. When that didn’t work, they proceeded with a fresh IVF transfer. Join us to hear how she lost hope multiple times during her journey, but came back more hopeful than ever after a break and tackled infertility with everything she had.

Once she and her husband were married, they headed back to the RE and tried timed intercourse, IUI, and eventually IVF. Our success story today is Mallory, who has hypothalamic amenorrhea that was diagnosed when her period never appeared after stopping birth control. Mallory’s story differs from most since she was not even ready to get pregnant when she first saw her RE! Even though Mallory was not underweight, it seemed that her lifestyle as a fitness trainer and “gym rat” was to blame for the disorder. Mallory cut her exercise by 80% and increased her calories by 1,000/day in an effort to improve her reproductive health.

Our success story today is Erin. She was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries, which differs from PCOS. Erin always had an idea that she might have trouble conceiving, primarily because her periods have never been regular. She and her husband started trying in the early 2014, and soon saw an RE and had tests done. At that point, her polycystic ovaries were discovered.

She was diagnosed with endometriosis while undergoing infertility treatments involving Clomid, timed intercourse, and IUI cycles. After six years and two miscarriages, Maria began to consider adoption. She says it was a “freeing” feeling to CHOOSE to be done with fertility treatments.
